We the Media Part 4

December 8, 2008

In this last section of We the Media, Gilmor address issues of the internet that are very important.  He discusses things like libel, slander, and privacy.  It doesn’t seem like these things are really regulated online as much as it is in other forms of media.  Cases on slander through the use of internet are won but it just doesn’t seem as strict online as it is in other places.  I think that it’s because the internet is so hard to keep track of.  There are countless websites about countless subjects and it’d be impossible to read through all the websites for content.  People are also able to take content off of other people’s websites and pawn it off as their own.  It really doesn’t seem like enough is being done about issues with the internet but at the same time I can also understand why it is the way it is.  It would take an immeasurable amount of time and energy to even begin to attempt at something on a scale so big because it’s worldwide and there is just so much content.  People have been downloading music, movies, and shows for years and others have tried to stop them for years.  However, it continues to persist because it cannot really be fully regulated.  It’ll be many more years to come before a well-working system can be designed and implemented to tackle all of the issues we deal with online.  Privacy is also a huge issue with the internet.  Everything we do online is tracked.  People also have to worry about their identities being stolen or valuable information.  Others get so much spam they have to open new e-mail accounts.  Like any other form of new technology, the internet is a work in progress that can continually be improved.
